So, lets discover the Schist Villages of Lousã?
Lousã
Firstly, let us start at the beautiful Lousã Village. Located right in the center of Portugal, with a rich historical and natural heritage, this town is a must-visit for those seeking nature and, at the same time, a journey back in time.
In the center of the village, you can take a stroll to admire the famous manor houses, such as the Palácio dos Salazares or the Casa da Viscondessa de Espinhal, among others. Be sure to also visit the Igreja Matriz and the Misericórdia.
About 2 km from the village center, following the walkways of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, you'll find the famous Lousã Castle, emerging amidst a lush green landscape. This spot marks the start and end of several trails through the Schist Villages.
Near the castle, you’ll also find the Nossa Senhora da Piedade River Beach, the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos.
f you do this route on foot—starting and ending at the City Hall—you'll cover the Mills Route.
After visiting the castle, we also recommend heading to the Gevim Viewpoint and the Nossa Senhora da Piedade Viewpoint on the National Road. The Nossa Senhora da Piedade viewpoint offers a view that makes the Lousã Castle look even more mysterious.
However, if you continue along this road for a few more kilometers, you'll reach the famous Trevim Swing. We suggest visiting at sunset for a truly magical landscape, though it can be quite busy. If you still have time, just a 15-minute drive away, you can find the beautiful Ribeira das Quelhas Waterfalls.
Lousã is also home to Portugal’s most famous liqueur, Licor Beirão, produced just 3 km from the village center.
If you like museums, Lousã has two. The Museu etnográfico Dr. Louzã Henriques and EcoMuseum of Serra da Lousã
Schist Villages - Talasnal, Chiqueiro e Casal novo
To visit these three villages, follow the Rota dos Serranos. Starting and ending at Lousã Castle, this trail covers around 7 km, taking about 3 hours to complete. This route should be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, as it passes through the heart of the villages, where you’ll likely try local delicacies and chat with locals. Plan most of your day for this “journey back in time.”
Starting at Lousã Castle and following the São Simão stream, you’ll soon see Talasnal, the largest and most famous Schist Village in Lousã.
Take time to explore the entire village, chat with locals, and try the “Talanisco” — a local dessert made with chestnut and honey. Relax and enjoy!
When you’re ready to leave Talasnal, the trail continues through one of the village's alleys toward Chiqueiro. This small village has only two permanent residents. It’s bordered by two streams, where you can cool off if it’s hot
Finally, a short 1 km walk brings you to Casal Novo. Once in the village, don’t miss the community threshing floor for a beautiful view of Lousã and its castle.
Between Chiqueiro and Casal Novo, you’ll pass by the famous "Isto é Lousã" sign.
As you leave Casal Novo, you’ll find a winding road leading to a cross, from where you can already see your destination—the Lousã Castle.
You can end your walk with a swim at the Nossa Senhora da Piedade River Beach, located near the castle, to wrap up the day beautifully!
Aldeias de Xisto Candal e Cerdeira
To visit these two villages, we recommend following the Rota das Levadas. This linear trail starts at Lousã Castle or Cerdeira Village and is about 7 km, taking around 3 hours. Leave extra time to visit the villages at your leisure and relax.
Starting at Lousã Castle, the trail follows the Ribeira de São João. Near the hydroelectric plant, you’ll see the small Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Luz. Continuing along the path, you’ll arrive at Candal Village. Just a few meters before, you’ll have the chance to visit the Candal Waterfall.
Once in Candal, go up to the viewpoint to admire the village below. Also, visit the water mills and the traditional olive oil presses.
Once you’re done in Candal, it’s time to walk another 2 km to reach Cerdeira Village.
Today, Cerdeira Village is a creative hub, an idyllic retreat for those seeking a quiet, natural setting with creative infrastructure.
Since this is a linear trail, you’ll need to call a taxi to return to your starting point, costing about 10 Euros to take you back to Lousã Castle.
However, if you’re short on time, you can drive to Candal and do only the trail to Cerdeira and back, covering 4 km and saving time and money on a taxi.
Schist Villages Aigra Nova and Aigra Velha, Comareira, Pena e Gondramaz
From Lousã Castle, you can visit other Schist Villages—Aigra Nova, Aigra Velha, Comareira, and Pena. These four villages are close to each other and can be visited in a couple of hours.
However, Gondramaz, while also near Lousã, is in the opposite direction of the other four. If you have to choose, we recommend Gondramaz, where artwork is carved into the facades of the houses.
Cabril do Ceira Gorge
Just 13 km from Lousã, you’ll find a hidden gem that remains mostly unknown to the general public: the majestic Cabril do Ceira Gorge. This geological marvel is a natural split in the rock, creating a beautiful river beach. You’ll need to drive on a dirt road for about 2 km to reach it. Parking can be a bit challenging.
To cover all these highlights, we recommend spending at least three days to enjoy everything this region has to offer.
If you have extra days, don’t miss heading further south to visit the Fragas de S. Simão
